Relief sculpture

Description

So at last I am submitting pictures of my 3d Art final from last semester. My class took a trip to the Cincinnati Art Museum and had to pick a figure sculpture to imitate in relief-form. I chose to do the back of this sculpture of a Freedman by John Quincy Adams Ward: [link]

This was my first time actually sculpting a figure with this kind of clay (everything before was a lame pot or some dice), and I am really proud of how it turned out. My favorite thing about the final result is the fabric of his drape. I had fun making it, but I can't for the life of me explain how I did it (because I don't even know myself. I just winged/wang it).

the hardest part was his right arm, because it sticks out of the sculpture instead of resting on the back part. it was hard getting it into the right position and keeping it there.

Top left: top view, with good shadows to see the muscle and detail of the cloth.
Top right: side view of sculpture coming out of the relief
Bottom left: slanted view of other side of relief
Bottom right: other slanted view...
